What is a Stage 2 Statutory Plate?

August 15, 2023

Clarks Vehicle Conversions is a Type Approved “Multi-Stage Builder”. As such, once we have completed a conversion we will affix an additional “Statutory Plate” -as required by law.

The plate contains information outlining how the vehicle has been modified beyond the “Stage 1 Build” carried out by the original base vehicle manufacturer aka original equipment manufacturer (OEM).

Details included:

  • Converter Company details
  • Conversion Type Approval Number, if applicable, and/or Stage Number
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW), if different to previous stage
  • Gross Train Weight (GTW), if different to previous stage
  • Axle Weight Limits, if different to previous stage

Clarks are often the only converter after Stage 1; hence this is known as a “Stage 2 Statutory Plate”. More complex conversions may require multiple stages with an additional Statutory Plate per stage.

WHAT DOES THE PLATE LOOK LIKE AND WHERE WILL I FIND IT?

In a Clarks conversion, the “Stage 2 Statutory Plate” takes the form of a rectangular tamper evident/proof self-adhesive label (sticker) placed next to the “Stage 1 Plate” installed by the OEM.

WHAT IS A TAMPER PROOF STICKER AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

A Tamper proof, or Tamper evident, sticker is a self-adhesive label that provides evidence of any attempt to tamper with, or remove, said sticker. This is evident on both the label and the vehicle they are applied to.

If any attempt is made to remove/peel the sticker, the base material will “break away”, revealing a repeat pattern of the word “VOID” on the sticker  (essentially destroying it) whilst simultaneously leaving the same “VOID” pattern, in relief, on the vehicle where the sticker was originally situated.  This results in the sticker having minimal adhesive and as such cannot be applied directly to another vehicle.

WHAT IF MY CONVERSION DOESN’T HAVE A STAGE 2 PLATE?

If you have received a new conversion directly from Clarks, a “Stage 2 Statutory Plate” is installed as standard on our Type Approved and IVA conversions. The plate is applied and checked by our diligent Quality Control operatives when each vehicle undergoes our 191- Point Quality Control Check before leaving our Conversion Centre. If for some reason your new conversion doesn't have a “Stage 2 Statutory Plate”* contact your converter immediately as someone may have removed it, or the vehicle may have not been registered correctly.

* For multi-stage conversions, there should be a Statutory Plate for each conversion stage.
